With the help of Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning, Delhi Capitals opened their campaign with a 60-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday (March 5). Shafali and Lanning have started with a bang in the Women's Premier League. Both shared a partnership of 162 runs for the first wicket. After being invited to bat first, Delhi scored 223 runs for the loss of two wickets against RCB. In reply, RCB's team could only score 163 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs.
American Tara Norris took 5 wickets for 29 runs from Delhi Capitals. Not a single batsman from RCB has faced her. Skipper Smriti Mandhana scored 35, Heather Knight 34 and Meghan Shutt 30. At one stage, the team had lost seven wickets for 96 runs in the 14th over, but Heather Knight and Megan Shutt put on a 54-run partnership for the eighth wicket to reduce RCB's deficit.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals' 19-year-old aggressive batsman Shafali hit 10 fours and four sixes in a 45-ball innings. She played an innings of 84 runs. Lanning, the captain who led Australia to the ICC T20 World Cup, scored 72 runs off 43 balls with 14 fours.
RCB got their first wicket at the batting-friendly Brabourne Stadium in the 15th over when England skipper Heather Knight dismissed opposition skipper Lanning with her spin and Richa Ghosh took a good catch behind the wicket of Shafali inside one ball. However, by then it was too late. Lanning and Shafali put on 162 off 87 balls to lay the foundations for a 200-plus stand. Marijan Kapp and Jemimah Rodriguez then put on an unbroken partnership of 59 runs. Cap scored 39 not out in 17 balls and Jemima scored 22 not out in 15 balls.
Shafali, who led India to the Under-19 World Cup title under his leadership, took the bad balls very seriously. She completed her half-century in 31 balls off the bowling of Megan Schutt. Lanning completed his half-century in 30 balls with a boundary off Knight. Delhi Capitals hit 12 boundaries in the Powerplay. The team had crossed the hundred run mark in ten overs. RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana tested seven bowlers in her first match as captain in the Women's Premier League. Mandhana had won the toss and decided to bowl first.
