Indian benchmark index Nifty fell around 17,600 on March 9.
At the close, the Sensex was down 541.81 points or 0.90% at 59,806.28 and the Nifty was down 164.80 points or 0.93% at 17,589.60. About 1558 shares advanced, 1858 shares declined and 112 shares remained unchanged.
Adani Enterprises, M&M, SBI Life Insurance, Reliance Industries, and Adani Ports were the top losers on the Nifty, while Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro, Bharti Airtel, Apollo Hospitals and Axis Bank were among the top losers.
FMCG, construction, auto, and IT each fell 1 percent, while metal and power sectors saw buying.
The BSE Midcap index fell by 0.55 percent and the Smallcap index by 0.2 percent.
The Indian rupee closed at 81.98 per dollar against the previous close of 82.05
