The Women's Premier League was held yesterday on Saturday. A new chapter began with a bang at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on March 4. Actresses Kiara Advani, Kriti Sanon, and pop singer AP Dhillon mesmerized everyone with their performances at the first inaugural function. Harmanpreet Kaur and young spinner Saika Ishaq followed with their performances to give Mumbai Indians a big win over Gujarat Giants.
Mumbai Indians won the first match by 143 runs. Gujarat won the toss and decided to bowl first. Mumbai scored 207 runs losing 5 wickets in 20 overs. He created history in T20 cricket on Indian soil. This is the first time in Indian women's cricket that more than 200 runs have been scored in a T20 match. In reply, the Gujarat team could only score 64 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 15.1 overs.
Gujarat captain Beth Mooney was ruled out due to injury in the first over and did not bat. The Gujarat team will have to forget this defeat soon. He will not get enough rest as the team has to play another match on Sunday (March 5) the very next day. Gujarat will face UP Warriors on this ground.
Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet started scoring as soon as he entered the field. At one point he hit seven fours in seven consecutive balls. The way Harman was batting reminded me of New Zealand's Brendon McCullum. In the very first match in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), McCullum had a blast. While playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, he scored 158 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Harman batted in the same manner. Her innings started the tournament with a bang.
Harmanpreet Kaur top scored with 65 runs from Mumbai. She hit 14 fours in 30-ball innings. She was honored with the man of the match award. Opener Hilly Mathews scored 47 off 31 balls and Amelia Kerr scored an unbeaten 45 off 24 balls. Sneh Rana took the highest two wickets for Gujarat. Whereas for Gujarat, only Dayalan Hemlata and Monica Patel could reach double figures. Hemalta scored an unbeaten 29 off 23 balls. Four and two sixes also came from Hemlata's bat. Saika Ishaq took the maximum four wickets from Mumbai. Natalie Seaver and Amelia Kerr took two wickets each.
Tomorrow the second match of the tournament will be Royal Challengers vs Delhi Capitals at 3:30 PM and Uttar Pradesh Warriors vs Gujarat Giants at 7:30 PM
