Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar will be specially honored by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) by erecting a statue at the Wankhede Stadium here. The statue is slated to be unveiled on Tendulkar's 50th birthday on April 24 or during the 50-over World Cup at the end of the year. This decision has been taken 10 years after Sachin's retirement from cricket. Mumbai Cricket Association president Amol Kale said, "This will be the first statue at the Wankhede Stadium. It will be decided soon where it will be placed. Tendulkar is the 'Bharat Ratna' and everyone knows what he did for cricket. On his 50th birthday, this is a gift from the MCA." will Sachin has already given permission for this three weeks ago."
The Wankhede Stadium currently has a stand named after Sachin Tendulkar. The MCA had decided to honor former India captain Sunil Gavaskar by erecting a corporate box and a stand named after batting legend Dilip Vengsarkar. There are no statues of cricketers in stadiums in the country.
Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, VDCA Stadium in Andhra and Holkar Stadium in Indore, has three such separate statues of former Indian batsman C.K.Naidu.
There is a 300 kg statue of Shane Warne at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In 2011, Warne said at the unveiling, "It's a great honour. It's a bit strange to see myself; but I'm very proud
