Delhi Capitals defeated Gujarat Giants by 10 wickets and 77 balls in the Women's Premier League match on Saturday thanks to all-rounder Marijana Kapp's sharp bowling and Shafali Verma's brilliant batting. This is Delhi's third win in four matches in the tournament and Gujarat's third loss in four matches.
Gujarat won the toss and decided to bat first. The Gujarat team scored 105 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Delhi scored 107 runs without losing a wicket in just 7.1 overs. Shafali Verma scored an unbeaten 76 off 28 balls to lead Delhi Capitals to a resounding win against Gujarat Giants.
The audience got to see Shafali's superhit show. She completed her half-century in just 19 balls. She hit 10 fours and five sixes in her innings. Her strike rate was 271.43. Captain Meg Lanning, who came in to open the innings with him, remained unbeaten after scoring 21 off 15 balls. She hit three fours.
Shafali's innings can be gauged from the fact that Delhi scored 87 runs in the powerplay, i.e. in the first six overs, while chasing the target of 106 runs. This is the highest score ever by a team in the Powerplay in the Women's Premier League.
Earlier, Kim Garth scored 32 runs for Gujarat. Georgia Wareham scored 22 runs and Harleen Deol scored 20 runs. Tanuja Kanwar contributed 13 runs. Apart from these four batsmen, no one could reach double figures. Marijan Kapp bowled well for Delhi. She took five wickets. Shikha Pandey got three wickets and Radha Yadav got one wicket.
Marijan Kapp was awarded the man of the match award. She bowled decisively with 5 wickets for 15 runs.
Mumbai Indians will play a match against the third-ranked UP Warriors tomorrow evening. If Mumbai continues its winning streak, it will seal their place in the playoffs. But, if the Warriors register a big win against Mumbai, there could be a lot of changes in the points table.
